Log April 26, 2004 Powell Point Cape, Eleuthera Latitude 24° 50.23N - Longitude 76° 21.09W The wind blew southeast, finally making it possible to get to Eleuthera. We sailed close-hauled to Powell Point on the tip of Eleuthera's 'chin' and stayed at the Cape Eleuthera Marina in order to offload the tainted water we bought in Georgetown and replace it with fresh treated water from the deep wells on Eleuthera. Having been in the start-up business in a former life, I couldn't help but marvel at the remnants that marked the passing of the huge resort that once occupied hundreds of acres here. The current dilapidation of the property dims the atmosphere of this marina even though it is one of the easiest to enter, deepest, and most convenient I've seen yet. A stream running through the marina basin, dredged many years ago, permits a continuous flushing of the water, resulting in a clean, beautiful and fresh smelling harbor. There were 3 boats in the marina that night in an area that could handle possibly 20 or more. There are no land-based amenities, the nearest settlement being over six miles away. Also, boats without air conditioning, may find it uncomfortable, both from being sheltered by the wind and from the mosquitos that lay in wait to feast on you. With my bicycle rusting away on deck, I decided to give it to the marina. Perhaps some other boater will want to stretch their legs or go explore the ruins of the resort. Bye folding bike'.may your rust be with you! |
