Log January 25, 2004 Staniel Cay, Latitude 24° 10.7N - Longitude 76° 26.5W Arrived in
lovely Staniel Cay this evening. It has much more "height"
than some of the islands here. We sailed for the first time in Exuma Sound
(outside or east of the Exuma Island chain) today rather than the shallower
Exuma Banks (inside, west of the chain). The deep water of
the Sound is an unforgettable deep purple - blue, and even with just a
little bit of wind today, was wildly swishing with a northeast swell.
Got to the anchorage in just enough time to climb up to Club Thunderball
on the hill above the anchorage to watch the sunset. And for the
second time in my life, I saw the rare sunset phenomenon, the Green Flash
- priceless! Once past the borders of the Land and Sea Park today,
I tried to troll with my hand line, but the wind forced us to tack (zig
zag) to our destination and the line got caught in the propeller of the
outboard. Duh! Guess I should either get the outboard blade
out of the water or remember to reel in my hand line when tacking in the
future. Oh well, no harm done, I happen to like "tuna mac"
casserole, which is what we ended up eating (instead of the grilled tuna
I was dreaming about). Tomorrow we need to do some repairs on the
broken bow roller that bent in one of the storms. The windlass is
a lost cause, but at least fixing the bow roller will make hand - pulling
the anchor less difficult. I"m also interested in seeing a
little bit of the town (a town!) and walking a bit. I've been
taking some pictures, and hope to download them as soon as I can find
some Internet access - preferably one with high enough speed. Also,
Club Thunderball is named after the cave it faces, known by many as the
cave where they filmed the James Bond film, Thunderball. I"ll
go see the cave by dinghy and report back to you....later. |
